Cookie's Sterilisation

Cookie is sleeping super soundly right now.

He had his neutering done today at Vet Practice.

When we picked him up this evening, he was really active and restless, unlike Mudpie who was under much heavier sedation and really drowsy.

He had been really active till just now, after he'd gone to the loo.

I think he must be in some (if not, much) pain and tired from a traumatic day.

P.S.: I also got him microchipped. Extravagant much? Well I love him lots and hope to rear him for as many years as I can so I hope I don't lose him. I feel much guilt though cos I can't give Mudpie the same priviledges.

Remember when I stopped Cookie & Mudpie from meeting the rest of the cats cos I was afraid of virus spreading? (And also cos I was busy with school) Well I lifted that 'law' recently and attempted some play dates, but it's too late.

They seem to have forgotten each other! The other day Oreo came and Mudpie hissed at her everytime we got them near each other! And there was another day when I brought Cookie down and Tiger was pretty hostile to him, and wanted to fight him.

Mudpie's Spaying

Mudpie had an appointment for sterilization on 5th December. I was really worried about the surgery and all but it was a success! We did it at The Joyous Vet and Dr. Heng was the surgeon.

Here are photos from the night she came home.

She was pretty groggy from the anesthesia, pupils dilated and eyes watery. She kept trying to walk and jump but would stumble.

I wanted to separate the two, but Cookie insisted (by meowing fervently at my door) to come in so I had no choice but to let him in with my supervision.

So I let her sleep with me in my room for the night but she was active pretty soon and I didn't get much sleep after all cos she kept walking all over me.

Here are photos from the next morning. She and Cookie are enjoying canned food for convalescence. It was supposed to be just for her, but Cookie kept wanting to eat from her bowl so I had no choice but to feed it to him too.

It was definitely a quick recovery and she doesn't seem to feel any pain at all.

Here you can see her belly was shaved for the operation.

I am seriously curious about the silver powder they applied over the wound, wonder what is it. Maybe it seals the stitches. I dunno. ETA: I think I know what it is already - my bro told me about this new spray plaster thing.

She looks really cranky hehe...kinda miserable with the collar around.

Thing to note: Mudpie wet her bed the first two nights, I guess cos she was still weak. So in preparation for any pet post-surgery, I suggest laying their bed with a pet sheet that will absorb pee.

Her wound will supposedly take about two weeks to heal, so it's quite a challenge for me to look after her, and prevent Cookie from licking her / prevent her from going near the pond lest she falls in and get wet. Meaning she is house-bound now.

Cookie's surgey is on the 17th Dec.

Cookie's permanent teeth are coming out, and somehow they came out before his milk teeth dropped so you can see the permanent tooth pushing it's way through with the old tooth next to it a little shaky. Any day now. I hope he is not in too much pain.

Mudpie's teeth are also changing. So far I've picked up two teeth, one of Muddie's molar and the other of Cookie's right canine like you see in the picture.

Accidents

Cookie broke a glass.

When I wasn't in the room, Cookie jumped on a shelf and knocked down a glass of water, causing it to shatter into tiny bits. It dropped from quite high - a metre. There are bits as tiny as grains and super sharp I suppose. We had a tough time clearing it up and we're not through cos we gotta go over one more time with a hoover. Headache man. The past week they had also broken two porcelain dishes, though not as much damage. This is just so worrying.

First time sick

My two kitties fell mysteriously ill last thursday (18 Sep 2008).

When I got home, Dad said they didn't eat or drink all day and seemed rather lethargic. I measured their temperature and they were running fevers of 40.5 deg c. Mudpie meowed in pain when we touched her front limbs (I found out later that fever in cats may be accompanied by body aches.) The two were weak and could hardly walk a step before slipping to a lying position on the ground. I wasn't sure what to do, thought we'd just monitor them for a day before taking them to the vet. I fed them water through a syringe. They slept through the night in my room.

(Note to self: I had thought Cookie felt kinda warm the wednesday night before but didn't think much of it. He may have been the first to fall sick.)

The next morning, they were not much better, and I wanted to bring them to the vet. But Dad dissuaded me not to cos of the fees. And so I did something I was quite reluctant to do - Self medicate them with human medicine. I gave them small doses of crushed panadol with water. Didn't quite work with Muddy, cos she frothed it all out. So I let them rest again. Cookie was a little better - he ate a little.

In the afternoon I decided to feed them meds again. This time I force fed them the quartered tab. After a while their fevers had subsided so it worked. But Mudpie's nose and mouth turned purplish pale! I was so scared she'd die. (Cos at the same time I was reading thousands of warnings about feeding cats panadol.) But it all subsided after a few hours.

By evening, Cookie was quite recovered, and muddy ate as well. The next day they were both doing rather well and running again by afternoon. So I hope that bit of panadol didn't do permanent damage to them. But I guess I'll bring them to the vet next time. How they got sick is still a mystery to me. I was afraid someone poisoned their water, so I changed it. I kinda suspect that they got a virus from their older bros downstairs. They were brought downstairs a few days before they fell ill, on the 14th. And the cats downstairs were ill not long ago. I read that viruses could linger around things for long, even after the cats have recovered. But not sure of course. Well, we'll never find out.

Recycled Paper Litter - Two weeks of Hell

So for a while I'd been considering an alternative to clumping litter due to claims all around the web that it is unsafe for cats. So I finally picked up a pack of recycled paper litter. It was light, but it wasn't cheap - $17! To my regrettable dismay, I didn't think about the size of the paper pellets until I attempted to scoop the first batch of solid waste, only to scoop up the litter as well. How wasteful is that right? It became a tedious process of picking out the solid waste without carrying along too much litter. Another problem was that liquid waste stayed absorbed in the litter, and mixed up with the fresh litter so I couldn't pick it out. And after a few days the smell was bad. But I found it wasteful to clear it so I didn't till today, two weeks later. The stench of rotten pee from a few centimeters away is really pungent. Really sharp. It's like it turns acidic. Uric acid.

Bottom line is, never again I hope. And back to clumping litter.

Post-surgery ills

Poor Emo didn't eat or drink for three days after returning from surgery.

So he was brought back to the vet who found out that our golden boy got infection on his wounds, accompanied by high fever! Antibiotics was prescribed.

He's been real out of it these few days but he's getting better. The poor boy must be in real pain. And now Comel is sick too. Oh dear. MJ, on the other hand, is doing fine and back to his old self of running into lifts.

Oh and a new pet shop opened in the area! But it's pretty disappointing. It's tiny and cramp and they don't stock Science Diet Kitten Original 3kg pack!

Cat Traps

We saw a cat trap downstairs today. A cat trap! Guess who? I have a suspect... Well we kicked it such that it shut close. I wanna cut it out actually. Someone will come back and open it again! And then there'll be a hazard for my little friends...

The cage was fine when we saw it the other day.

But two days later, it got trampled by god knows who. Not us! But this'll sure displease them town council folk, which means disaster for us.

Tipped Ear Family

The clan from downstairs were sent for neutering this week. I think it was via some welfare organisation (cat welfare?), hence the tipped ears. The fees were majorly subsidised as well.

They were like taken away for three days.

Mommy. You can see her tummy skin is drooping down. Not sure if they removed her uterus or just the ovaries, but it doesn't look like that skin is gonna perk back anytime soon.

Well from fivelittlekittens, we just want to thank Mrs Tan, the volunteer who gifted her time and money. I'm really happy about this. We had all these worries about mommy getting preggers again and all these ideas of shipping the cats away just because of the complains. But now things will be much better.

Zomg Rika is back with my FURminator!!! Thank you Rika!!! It is better than I have dreamed! I am addicted to grooming now! The kids take to it well while they are sleeping. To them it's just like I'm scratching them. Tried it on MJ & co. and raked out a whole LOAD of cat hair. And after FURminatoring, their coats are shiny soft and clean! Awesomeness.

3 months: Booster shots

Cookie & Mudpie went for their booster vacs today. They are fine and healthy, save for being on the fat side! Cookie is 2kg! - while Muddy is about 1.5. Mom accompanied us and Dad ferried us there and and back, and I am truly grateful. The two slept the entire day but are now crazy active again. Mudpie is playing kitty soccer with a dried up rambutan. Cookie seems to be falling asleep again!

Dad gave the kids chinese names which we found real hilarious.

Mudpie: Xiao Hua, meaning Little Flower, cos of her colourful coat.

Cookie: Xiao Huang, Little Yellow, cos of his blonde coat.

I personally gave Cookie another chinese nickname: Xiao Ji - Little Chicken, just because, it rhymes with Cookie.

And you gotta pronounce these names with a real strong china accent!

Crusty Butt (Warning: Graphic content!)

Sigh. Mudpie has got serious crusty butt. I don't know why but she has lots of bits of dried poop stuck on her butt. Somehow she doesn't have a clean poop, and some poop remains on her butt and the interior as well. She doesn't clean it well. Used to be the gangsters* who licked her butt for her. Poop dries up and becomes crusty. Crusty butt. Chances of her leaving bits of crusted poop around the house - my bed! Omg! Noo! Extra work for me to clean her butt these days. Gotta use some vaseline to wipe her butt. She hates it and always struggles. It's a nightmare!

But Cookie has a relatively clean, crust-free butt leh. Is it a female thing? Oh actually I realised that Cookie has larger poop than Mudpie. I think she doesn't eat enough to form poop that expels well and will leave no stains. Yes, that is prolly the cause. Darn.

So I went out and had to leave the kitties outside the house just now. And when I came home, I found my darling mudpie at the ground floor lift lobby! At such an exact timing. Really don't know how she got there but I think I left them unattended for too long, really. Who knows what would have happened if I didn't see her at that exact time? She could have jumped into a drain and got lost.

Found out that my bro came home before me and saw her, but then how did she end up downstairs? I'd say it's cos she is afraid of my bro's girlfriend who has been like scaring her. And she must have ran away and somehow ended up downstairs. That's a likely theory since the two were still around till my bro came back. Either that or she was looking for Cookie, cos he entered the house when said bro came back. And she prolly didn't and went looking for him down the stairs and ended up you know where. Ok. I'm ranting.

Mutant cats (dream)

So I had this freaky nightmare that I was being attacked by mutant cats! It started when I visited this restaurant and they were abusing the cats by tying them to the wall alive (as displays??!) and they were struggling and I decided to rescue them! But then as I removed them from their misery, they turned on me and attacked me! jumping all over me! And they were like mutated ugly cats. One had like eight feet, others had mutated faces. And in self defense I was like killing them! Horrible but true.

I guess the reason for the dream is here: This morning I heard scratching at my door and it was my cats so I let them in, but tried to go back to sleep. Then then like were jumping all over me and disturbing me so I let them out again and got back to sleep. And then I had the dream. I also attribute it to this news yesterday.

Funny thing is I got awoken up in the midst of fighting the cats by my dad who came in to say that HDB was downstairs coming up to ask me questions about my cats. But it was a LIE! Urgh. Stupid Daddy. Cry wolf! So that is why I am here typing away. And I am so sleepy.

Food: Argh, ant infestation!

A torrent of ants have been crawling about my kitten's food bowls outside. I am rather irritated. I think my kits aren't eating their food cos of the ants! Their expensive $1 a day food! I think Mudpie got some ant bites as well. I put some poison out, and hope my babes don't lap it up.

A complain letter!! About MJ & co. :( Must be the evil cleaner who bad mouthed them!
And I never knew about this policy stated in point 2(which is also on the HDB site, unfortunately, deeming it valid.) before this! Did you?

Food: Dry food worries

I read this article and got kinda worried. It's stuff you need to know about cat food.

The article doesn't recommend these brands of dry foods as

they have either by-products, fillers, harmful artificial preservatives/flavourings or combinations:

Alpo, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Mighty Dog, and Ralston Purina products such as Dog Chow, ProPlan, and Purina One, 9 Lives, Amore, Gravy Train, Kibbles-n-Bits, Nature’s Recipe, Hill’s Science Diet Pet Food, Eukanuba and Iams, Kal Kan, Mealtime, Pedigree, Sheba, Waltham’s, Star-pro, Royal Canin.

They recommend Back To Basics Cat Food, Felidae. And the higher end ones I prolly can't afford: Avo-Derm, Pinnacle, Natural Balance and Innova.

Cookie and Mudpie were on Friskies adult cos it was cheap and available at the supermarket. But now I'm worried that the food is not good for them. Cheap food may lead to UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), especially in boys. And they are kittens! Shouldn't be on adult food!

The vet suggested Science Diet or Royal Canin. I decided to try out the former. It is twice the price of Friskies! But even the two are not recommended in the article. But ah well. Should be fine.

I calculated and Science Diet will cost me about $0.50 per kitten per day. Isn't so bad if you look at it this way right?

Day 61: First shots (Cookie & Mudpie)

Brought Cookie & Mudpie to the vet!
After enquiring prices and reading reviews, I decided on The Joyous Vet.
The service was good. I got Dr. Grace Heng, who was definitely very knowledgeable in her field. The only thing I don't like is their opening hours. I can only reach them after 12pm as they are not open in the morning which is quite ma fan.

Anyway, the two are good. They got their first vacs and worming meds. I was quite nervous, didn't know what to expect. I thought my kittens were gonna scream in pain! But guess what, Cookie didn't feel a thing! His shot went by real fast! Good boy! But Mudpie was a little more difficult. She didn't like it and Doc had to 'paralyse' her by the scruff to shoot her.

Also, we found out that the two have fur mites! Oh dear. But I didn't want the treatment as it was costly, but not life-threatening. And since my babes will prolly hang out with their mom & older bros who prolly gave them the parasites, it would be pointless to treat right?

So it cost me $39.40 each, after GST. And they even got laminated patient cards (with photos) and files with their vac certs and stuff. Cool beans?

Booster shots in a month, followed by shots in a year or three.

Day 57: First bath

I have permanently taken Cookie & Mudpie home. They are now under confinement in my house and not allowed to go down to their birthplace.

The day after the accident*, I bathed the two for the first time, and all by myself. It was quite a decent experience, not much meowing. I think using warm water helped. I know Maria bath her kits with cold water, but I will swear by warm water as cats are like humans. They won't like the cold.

So well, Mudpie was a little more fidgity while Cookie didn't make much noise till towards the end. I guess the trick is to make it as short as possible.

Divine Grace - The story of Cookie & Mudpie's accident

Question - Why did she decide on level 9?
Question - How did they survive?

I almost lost Cookie & Mudpie three days ago.

After Moo & Brownie were adopted, I decided it was time to bring Cookie & Mudpie home as well. Yes, I decided on Mudpie. So I prepared the corridor and brought the two up. Because my family is so anal about not letting the cats in the house, I left them outside. My mistake was leaving them alone unsupervised in this new environment.

When I went out to look for them, I couldn't find them. I asked the neighbours who told me that they came home and when the lift opened, the kittens ran in. So I hurriedly took the stairs to all floors and called for them, hoping to hear the bell of their collar. But I couldn't find them. In between I did hear some cat cries but I could not locate them. I took the lift to all levels again and called out. I went to level 1, level 3. Futile. I then asked Maria for help. She was worried.

She suggested to take the lift again and I suggested starting from the top floor but she pressed 9. We went out at 9, and as the door closed we heard a loud yell! It was one of them! We stretched our arms to keep the door from closing. Maria saw it. One of them was stuck in the side of the elevator! I was seriously shocked. I didn't expect to find it there. Maria said she thought it was mudpie. And if it was mudpie, I couldn't imagine the fate of Cookie. I sorta thought he didn't make it. That he had fallen down the elevator shaft to his death. We held open the door for dear life. I called emergency and they would send men only in twenty minutes.

I borrowed a flashlight and we shone in. It was Cookie! And he was alive, but we were not sure if he had any injuries. He cried a little and he seemed so tired - he just sat there and after a while he closed his eyes and refused to answer. We didn't know what to do for a bit. I went upstairs to get some food to lure him out and met my dad who just came home. He came to help. The food didn't work.

Somehow we thought of using something to prod Cookie out. First we tried poking him with a stick. It worked a little. But then one of us suggested water! I ran up to fill my water gun and we used it. It worked! There was an opening at the back, and we tried to get Cookie to come out that way. It didn't work. Dad suggested that we had to get him out from an opening a metre above. So I shot the water at Cookie and he actually climbed up the brick wall! My heart was beating real fast. Soon, Cookie emerged and Dad pulled him from the collar and we got him out safely. I hugged him and broke into tears!

We were all quite tired, and by then, the lift peeps had arrived. We wondered what had happened to Mudpie. We went down to first floor where the lift peeps had stopped the lift. They had opened the lift doors to check for cats, but didn't see any so they closed it and were preparing to leave. But thankfully we caught them and Dad insisted that they opened the doors again. I was afraid to look as I thought Mudpie was long dead. Honestly. I hid in a corner. Dad looked and said he saw Mudpie! She was hiding in the corner at level 0! Can you believe it? She fell all the way? But she wasn't moving, maybe she was dead. I think the lift peeps went in to get her out and realised that she was still alive! They brought her to me and I was relieved. She was unscathed, only prolly scared and tired. I didn't cry. I guess I truly love Cookie more.

But anyway. I was so tired after the whole ordeal. But pretty traumatised and decided to let the two kitties go back to their birthplace to stay for the night. I wasn't prepared to look after them. (P.S. I didn't get any sleep that night.)

Well so I feel that this was all a miracle. It wasn't their time yet. And it was providence that led us to find the kittens on time. Even the lift peeps said that they had never seen something like this happen before. So well, be careful with kittens or little animals. Don't let them near lifts.

It's almost two months. Maria has just told me that the kittens are ready to move on to their new homes in a week - next monday, July 14 2008. My heart is sinking. I can't believe that time has just zipped by. I haven't taken enough photos/videos of them! I have not taken photos lately! I just hope they go to good, responsible owners. I believe that a few of them will still be in our block/street, so thank goodness.

I will still blog when they leave, but only about the older bros and the ones I'm taking and the ones in our block.

DAY 30: Baby woes

I wasn't supposed to rant on this blog, but here goes. Don't read if you are just here for photos!

So I guess I was being selfish by abducting Cookie to sleepover with me last night. Taking him away from his comfort zone, his family, his source of food (mommy).

Mom was right in her pre-nagging for me not to do it.

1) "he's gonna shit and pee on you!"
Just when I tucked myself in, and turned off the lamp, Cookie cried, and tugged at my hair. I thought it was just the usual not-used-to-the-environment-want-food-greedy-baby-cry. I smelled something bad but wasn't sure. Surely he wouldn't...I got up and checked. There it was. A nugget of poo had emerged from Cookie's butt. It was pea-sized and green - the coloration we have derived from the new food that my neighbour Maria bought. I grabbed a wet wipe and swiped the shit off. Yuck. Thankfully it was a solid one. He really almost shat on me.

2) "you orredi sick ah. the cat hair will make you sick!"
Yes I have fallen sick with a throat infection & cough this week. I suspect it to be attributed by a secret ritual that I do with Cookie that Maria taught me. I won't tell you, but saliva was transferred. Damm, gotta go doctor.

3) "i tell you you cannot sleep ah."
Cookie cried every hour. And I woke up each time and the first thing I did was to check his butt. No problems there. But by 6am I gave up and dragged myself out of my bed and brought him back home. Then I had a better rest till 11am.

Okay gotta blaze!

Day 29: B care pool

Poor Moo. Second mishap in 24 hours.

Yesterday Moo got injured. It was an accident. One of us closed the door without knowing Moo was there and his left arm got squeezed. He was really traumatised. We hope he is okay. He was limping yesterday, but he has begun to use his left arm today. We hope there isn't any serious damage to his bones.

With babies around, we have to be extra careful, extra gentle, extra conscious of our surrounding. They are still tiny and fragile. Because we let the kits roam around the corridor freely (with supervision, of course), I often fear that I might accidently step on them.

So please be extra careful.

Day 29: Sorlid fud iz nut encaraged.

This is a quick post to mention that the kits have begun to try out the solid dry food that their mum & older sibs dine on. But I fear it is too hard and too large for them. Why?

Because, Moo got sick just now.
It's my fault. Mommy wasn't around, and they seemed hungry so I fed them. Well, Cookie & Oreo didn't get sick, but Moo did. After eating, he seemed to be choking. I was quite worried. I thought chicken nut bread! He then suffered discomfort for about 30mins throwing up whole pieces of the dry food. I aided him by administering the heimlich maneuver. (I hope I didn't break any of his ribs. Don't kill me, folks.) Apparently he didn't chew the food well. I also think he ate too fast.

So I don't think we should give them whole solid food yet!! Unless we blend it with a little water to a mushy state.

Day 22: Smell my bed. (Backlogged to bits)

So sorry for the lack of updates. It's not easy maintaining a photo blog, gotta edit lotsa pix! And yes, I just want to post THAT many pix cos they are all so pretty. No point storing them away in archives right? So here's the first belated entry.

In the morning of Day 22, I brought the kits up to my pad to smell my bed. Here are shots from my compact cam. I think the DSLR had no batt.

BTW, I am very confirmed adopting two kittens! I'll be taking Cookie and someone else, I haven't decided yet. It's likely to be Mudpie.

FYI, I think not many people know this, but you prolly noticed that the kits have blue eyes and think that it's real pretty. Unfortunately, the blue eyes won't stay. All kittens have blue eyes, and when they grow to become adult cats, their eye color will change to the typical yellow or, for them non-pedigree cats, a sorta dirty yellow-green. There is one cat breed with blue eyes, but the blue eyes often coincide with blindness in the cats, so it ain't a good thing for cats to have blue eyes.

Week 3: Back from camp! Warm welcome & growing infants!

I got back from camp yesterday and I went straight to find the kitties cos I really missed them dearly! I was so afraid they they'd forget me and be hostile to me. But I got a nice surprise! Emo & Chomile came toward me when I arrived from the lift! (Usually when I come, they take one look at me and go "Oh, it's just Jane lah. Nothing special." and then continue with their activities, ignoring my presence.) So they must have missed me :). Well I bought a malaysian fish snack for them - the one that comes with five flat coins on a satay stick - and they gobbled it all up.

But the biggest surprise was the five kitties. They have grown so much in five days! They have much improved brain activity and can respond through sight, touch and sound! They are also less timid and will scream less when you carry them. Walking is still in the work. All five senses have heightened.

1) Sight
Vision is much clearer. They are curious about the world and will look around. I waved a string at them and they would follow the object with their eyes! And they will look at you too! Really cute!

2) Sound
Similar to sight, they can hear soft sounds such as when you shake a bell at them or when you talk, they will look at you if it should interest them.

3) Touch
Tickle their belly and they will turn on their backs in enjoyment! Sometimes it will also cause them to be incontinent and pee will leak outta their hoo-haa!

And they now self-groom by licking their fur and fingers! They often put their paws in their mouth and nibble on their nails and sometimes it is only the thumb and it looks like they are sucking their thumb! And maybe they really are but it's just so tiny for me to confirm so.

4) Taste
Oh and they lick you too! And their teeth have emerged!

5) Smell
They do sniff a lot but I can't tell how much they respond to smell.

Ah yes, I hope to get pictures today. So later alligator!

DAY 16: Blog revamp & Short break

Oh and as you can see on the new banner, minor corrections to the kittie's names. Our Mudpie is Brownie, and Mocha is Mudpie - as confirmed by the kids.

The perfect cat

Of recent times I have fallen in love with the Corgi Pembroke.

They are on sale at Pet Safari Vivo! There's also one at the Jurong Point pet shop, uninterestingly named "Corgi". Seriously. It's like naming your cat "Cat". Right? Anyway, he's adorable. And they are adorable. I just have this affinity for short and stumpy animals. I don't understand the craze over schnauzers, really. I think they look like old men. Eh, beauty is subjective.

So anyway, I just discovered that there's a variety of cats similar to the Corgi, and they are called Munchkins! How apt!

The only thing I don't like is their long tail. I love MJ's poofy bobtail :P. The perfect cat for me would be a short-haired munchkin with a poofy bobtail. (Mate MJ with a munchkin!) I think. Well, I wonder if they can climb trees. Those short legs could pose a liability.

Nevertheless, there is a breeder in singapore. Little Red Dot Cattery. I am so tempted.

Day 12: Bathing Day!

It's Friday, bathing day! & I got to help out!
But first, a quick check on the babes...ohhh!

Like, about time, Cookie! Isn't he precious? Last night I had a nightmare that someone was torturing MJ, and I was so terrified, I went searching for him but then I woke up. I know, obsessed! But well, I digress.

Ah yes, no documentation of the bathing cos I was helping to handle the crazy cats lah! And yes, they were real aggressive, well, Emo & Chomile. Emo was the first to go and he struggled a lot, we had to grab hold of his front legs real tight. And he kept meowing in resentment. Next, Chomile. He is apparently the most aggressive. He bit and scratched. MJ was quite obedient, much to my surprise.

Hi. I've been lazy to blog just cause it's pretty lay chay to 'watermark' the images and get the colors consistent. I also haven't been taking photos of the babes cos everytime I try to, they scream so shrilly, if that's a word. *checks dictionary* That IS a word!

But here's an update.

Mocha opened both eyes on Monday.

Oreo was the second to open eyes.

See, she doesn't like me holding her. Yes, we think she's a girl. But no confirmations yet.

Little Mocha, little malnourished, quiet and meek Mocha had all of us fooled! Who would have thought it'd be the first to open its eye! Yes, eye. One eye. The left eye. Check it out.

And we just found out she's a girl! So girls are smarter, as always.

Day 5: Hanging with MJ & E

Yesterday I hung out with Manja and Emo.
I wanted to help bathe them, and had told my neighbour that I would come down, but alas, she forgot to wait for me! :/ Have to wait another week again...

So I went back and the two kits followed me home. I let them play around my place and tried to introduce them to dad, well, in hopes of getting him accostomed to cats in the house.

They had lots of fun fishing!

Emo is very much a hunter.

I realise that MJ is kinda timid in a way. He didn't go near the fish pond before, but when Emo did, he followed. But he (MJ) wasn't as daring as Emo.

After a bit, oh no! Emo made a poop in Dad's tray of gravel!

He thought it was a litter box! Hilarious. His poop really stank, I tell you.

After that, I fed them a snack.

Emo lapped up the plate!

After eating, cats turn away and clean themselves.

That ended the morning.

I was about to send them home when Daddy happily decided to wash the corridor. He would bring out the hose and spray water all over his plants and ponds the ceiling as well, crazy dude. And the kitties got frightened and refused to leave! I picked them up and brought them out, but they were so scared they held on tight to me. With their claws. So I slowly let them down. emo was kinda frantic to get back in the house, and he accidently dug through my skin, resulting in this deep gash in my hand. Oh, great. Thanks, dad.

Well I managed to get them out after Dad finished with his washing.

In the evening, I visited them again, to bring them downstairs to play.

They were sleeping but I woke them up, haha.

I had some difficulty getting MJ out of the lift, cos he was just sitting there all sleepy!

But he came out afterall.

They like to climb trees!

I was there shooting them when a bunch of kids with good intentions approached us, thinking that the cats had escaped again. So they decided to bring them back, much to my dismay. Their rowdiness kinda freaked the cats out, and Emo hopped into a drain.

And he went in, urgh! And disappeared far away. Urgh. In the meantime, the kids had brought MJ back. Srsly. Disturb my photoshoot!! They came back and heard of Emo's escape, and freaked out. Soon, a search party involving my neighbour's kids combed the entire neighbourhood. I chipped in to search too 'for show', believing strongly that Emo would return on his own anyway. After a while I gave up, and went upstairs. Amazingly, the kids found Emo is some drain far away! They were all so pleased with themselves.

And that ended the day. Here are two shots from the day that I really like. They feature my kid neighbours.

FYI, many of the pictures were digitally enchanced. Some I couldn't really salvage due to poor lighting. Ah well.

Day 4

So I was experimenting with the camera today and it wasn't easy to shoot in dim corridor light, but there's always Photoshop...

He's the naughty one, I can tell. He mews really loudly, all the time.

I had to shoot fast, cos mama kept coming to bring her kitties back! She would pick them up with her mouth by their necks, and it would take a few bites to position it right. The poor kitties would struggle and scream like they were in pain! Oh dear!

Oreo. His face is too dark to see.

Ugly Kit No. 1. a.t.k.a. Mocha. His coat is like mama's. I think mama ought to be put down. She is producing kitties with really UGLY coats and it's so hard to love them. But I kinda have an inkling for Mocha...he's the quiet one. I think he'd be pretty tame. In fact, Mudpie & him are the two quietest.

Here is a shot of the family.
That's mama cat and the three big brothers (6 months old).

Emo is the most mature one. He was the first to welcome the babies. Chomile is in between. Manja is the baby, and he is afraid of his baby brothers! I think he was really upset about his mom giving birth. Poor manja - he's my favourite of all cos he really looks like a baby. He kinda didn't grow as big as the other two because he escaped and got lost for almost a month and didn't get to nurse. Xin calls him the 'prodigal kitty', :P.

And here is another shot of the babies I took with flash. They live in a dark shelf. They can't walk. They kinda drag themselves along wobbly. It's kinda funny to watch. They are so fragile. They meow like chicks.

Yes, we kinda decided to name this batch after confectionery.

Greetings. I have started this blog to document the life of my neighbour's kittens and cats.

A brief introduction, so I've heard from my neighbour (correct me if I'm wrong):

It began two years back, when a stray feline (now mommy cat) followed the kids home. They decided to keep her. She was still young, maybe six months old. The following year, she got knocked up and delivered her first litter: the three kits - Manja, Comel & Emo in December 2007.

I personally met the three pussies in March this year, when they were four months old and still quite small. I discovered them at the stairwell, attempting to explore the neighbourhood. They were still young and so they didn't dare to go far. I found their home and since then have been visiting them on a regular basis.

Soon, mama cat was preggers again, and to my sheer fortune, I got to witness her delivery this time! And she gave birth to five precious little tykes! I will try to document their growth on a daily basis, as much as I can, as well as share fun tales about their big brothers.

I'm not sure how long this blog will last, since the family is putting the kitties up for adoption and my mom doesn't allow me to adopt them! Oh, poo.

*Update* There is now a 90% chance that I can adopt! Mom & dad have given the green light, though mom is not as liberal about it. "No cats in the house!", she nags. The problem now is my pesky bro & his girlpren who hates cats so much she wants them dead. Really don't know what to do about them. Urgh. Pray.

I am hoping to get two kittens, cos they can be playmates. But mom doesn't want two! I have choped Cookie :P. I hope to get Oreo to keep him company...
